The Venus flytrap, a green plant that is red in the inside, is most famous for its snap trap. It feeds on insects by trapping the ones that come in contact with one or two hairs located on the inner surface of their traps. However, human activity has completely eliminated this plant from the United States.
Hydroponic gardening also requires the use growing media. Different mediums can be used which have to retain the food rich moisture. They must also be able to physically support the plant roots. The following have been the most effective media so far: expanded clay, perlite, styrofoam, sand, rockwool, vermiculite, pea gravel.
During observation, visionaries like Bill Mollison, Dan Jason and many other gardeners found that Mother Nature had a lot to teach us about feeding ourselves. One such lesson was in regard to soil nutrition. There are a number of plants that absorb nutrients from the air, process and release them into the soil for other plants to use. A few good examples are beans and lemon. Both of these plants absorb nitrogen from the air through their leaves, process it and release it into the soil through their roots. So instead of using nitrogen fertilizer, why not grow beans and lemons strategically, to fertilize the soil? For example, you could inter-crop beans and maize so that the maize benefits from the nitrogen released into the soil by the beans.
Start the process of planting tomato seeds about 8 weeks before the warm weather. Use quality potting mix and fill a seed tray to about 1 inch from the top. Scatter the seeds over the top of the tray with about 4 inches between each seed. The reason for spreading the seed out is that when it is time to transplant them you do not damage the fine roots in separating the plants. Mist the soil and seeds and place the seed tray in a warm location.
